Bluebell Season in South London: The Most Magical Time to Book Your Family, Children's or Maternity Shoot

There is a particular kind of magic that only happens in April and May. The bluebells come up almost overnight — sweeping across woodland floors in waves of violet and indigo, carrying that soft, sweet scent that seems to belong to another world entirely. It lasts only two or three weeks at most. And then it's gone.
According to the Woodland Trust, the average bluebell flowering date is around the 9th of April, and once they're out, you typically have a fortnight or so to see them at their finest. Which means that right now, if you've been thinking about a photoshoot, the time to act is today — not next week.
South London is genuinely one of the best places in the country to experience bluebell season. Within a short drive or a train ride from almost anywhere in the city, you can find yourself standing in ancient woodland with bluebells stretching as far as you can see. Here are some of my favourite locations for family, children's and maternity shoots — and why each one makes such a stunning backdrop.
Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood, SE26
This pair of connected woodlands in Dulwich is one of south London's best-kept secrets, and absolutely stunning during bluebell season. By late April, the woods are transformed by a breathtaking display of bluebells, carpeting the ground in a shimmering violet haze.
Sydenham Hill Wood sits on the site of a former railway line and is roughly 24 acres in size — the last remaining swathe of the Great North Wood, an ancient forest that once stretched from Deptford all the way to Selhurst. Dulwich Wood lies adjacent, with trails snaking between the two, and tucked within it you'll find the ruins of a Victorian folly — a garden feature hidden in an enclosure of trees, the remnant of a once-grand estate.
From a photography perspective, the combination of bluebells, old-growth trees and that hidden Victorian ruin creates something genuinely otherworldly. It's a dream for maternity shoots especially — there's a quiet, enchanted quality to these woods that suits the mood perfectly. The light through the canopy is beautiful in the morning, and the paths are peaceful enough that even small children can wander freely without too much noise or traffic nearby.
Oxleas Wood, Greenwich
The ancient woodland of Oxleas Wood is home to many surprises, and in late spring, bluebells take centre stage as the forest floor is carpeted in them. Some parts of Oxleas date back over 8,000 years to the end of the last ice age and walking through it during bluebell season, it genuinely feels like stepping into somewhere timeless.
For photoshoots, Oxleas is hard to beat. There's a popular café with parking nearby, and from there you can follow paths through the woods towards Severndroog Castle and roam through Jack Wood, where you'll find beautiful open areas perfect for outdoor shoots. Near the café, Oxleas Meadows offers gorgeous views out across the south of the city.
The combination of ancient woodland, dappled light and open meadow gives huge variety within a single shoot — ideal whether we're chasing toddlers through the trees, capturing a bump in golden light, or doing posed sittings with little ones in a basket.
There's also a practical bonus for families: the paths are reasonably good for buggies near the café, and the café itself is a lovely pit stop before or after a shoot.
Beckenham Place Park, Lewisham
Measuring at 96 hectares, Beckenham Place Park is Lewisham's largest park, with listed buildings dating back to the 18th century when John Cator developed the estate. It's a park that genuinely has everything: ancient woodland, a Georgian mansion, a wildflower meadow, a swimming lake, and — for a few glorious weeks in April — some of the most beautiful bluebell displays in south-east London.
There are expansive grassy areas, mildly hilly terrain, and footpaths through woods adorned with bluebells all within easy reach of Beckenham Hill station. For family shoots, the variety of landscapes within a single location is a real gift — we can move between woodland floor carpeted in blue, open meadow, and the elegant backdrop of the mansion itself, all within a short walk. It's also a brilliant option for sitting babies and young children who need somewhere flat and safe to be placed while we get the shot.
Petts Wood, Bromley
A little further south, but very much worth the trip. Petts Wood is an ancient landscape of oak, beech and ash, managed by the National Trust and well signposted with marked walking routes. The bluebells here are spectacular in a good year, and because it's managed by the National Trust, the paths are well-maintained and easy to navigate even with younger children and buggies.
Petts Wood is particularly lovely for children's sessions — there's enough space to let kids run freely, fallen logs and mossy banks to explore, and the kind of unspoilt woodland that makes children's eyes go wide. The dappled light through the beech canopy creates a naturally soft, beautiful quality of light that works wonderfully for photography.
When to Book — and Why It Has to Be Now
I want to be honest with you: bluebell season is brief, and my diary fills fast. Last year I was fully booked within days of opening up the calendar. The window is roughly late April to mid-May, and the best conditions — bluebells at peak bloom, decent light, not too much undergrowth — exist for perhaps ten days at a stretch. Factor in the weather and it narrows further.
If you've been sitting on the idea of a family, children's or maternity shoot and thinking "I'll get round to it", bluebell season is the single best reason to stop thinking and start booking. The photos you'll walk away with — your children in those woods, the light through the trees, the blue stretching out behind you — are the kind that end up on walls and stay there for decades.
These shoots are ideal for families with children of any age, sitting babies, expectant mamas at any stage of pregnancy, and families who simply want beautiful, natural portraits in a setting that feels a world away from the city.
Sessions are kept relaxed and fun — I work at your child's pace, not mine, and I promise we will always get the shot.
