A Guide from Balham Bumps & Babies
So you're expecting — congratulations! You've probably started thinking about all the things you want to remember from this chapter: the bump, the anticipation, the glow (and yes, the exhaustion too). A maternity photoshoot is one of the loveliest ways to mark this fleeting, extraordinary time before everything changes forever.
But if you've never had a professional photoshoot before, it's completely normal to feel a little unsure about what it actually involves. What do you wear? Where does it happen? Will you have to pose awkwardly? Do you need to look "ready"?
The short answer: no, no, and absolutely not. Here's exactly what to expect when you book a maternity session with Balham Bumps & Babies in London.
First, a Chat About What You're Hoping For
Before we even think about picking up a camera, we'll have a proper conversation. I want to understand what kind of images appeal to you — whether that's relaxed and natural, a little more polished and editorial, or a blend of both. I'll ask about your home, your favourite spaces, your partner, any other children or pets you'd like to include, and what you're hoping to do with the photos afterwards.
This isn't just admin. It's the bit that makes everything else go smoothly.
Where the Session Happens
Unlike a lot of photographers, I don't work from a fixed studio. Instead, I come to you — which, honestly, is one of the things my clients love most about the process.
Sessions take place either at your home or in one of South London's beautiful outdoor locations. Being based in Balham means I'm on the doorstep of some genuinely gorgeous green spaces: Tooting Common, Wandsworth Common, Clapham Common, Brockwell Park, and more. In the warmer months especially, a golden-hour session in one of these parks can produce the most magical images.
That said, your home is a wonderful option too — and not just for lifestyle shots. With the right light and a little space, I can create beautiful, studio-style portraits right in your living room or bedroom. No need for a Pinterest-perfect interior. Every home has good light somewhere, and I'll find it.
If you're based in South West London, such as, Balham, Clapham, Tooting, Streatham, Brixton, Wandsworth, Wimbledon, or anywhere across London, I travel to you — no studio trip required.
What Happens on the Day
I'll arrive to your home (or we'll meet at our chosen outdoor location) and we'll ease into things gently. There's no rushing, no rigid schedule, and no moment where you'll feel like you don't know what you're doing.
I'll start by getting a feel for the space and the light, and then we'll simply begin. I'll guide you throughout — where to stand, how to hold your hands, where to look — so you never feel lost or stiff. Most people worry they're "not photogenic" before a session; most people forget that entirely within the first ten minutes.
If you're having an outdoor shoot, we'll aim for the most flattering light of the day — usually late afternoon in summer, or mid-morning when the light is softer. If the weather does what British weather inevitably does, I'll always have a backup plan.
A typical maternity session lasts around one to two hours. That gives us plenty of time to try a few different outfits, move between locations within your home, or capture a variety of moments without anyone feeling pressured or exhausted.
When Should You Book?
The sweet spot for maternity photography is between 28 and 36 weeks. By this point, your bump is beautifully round and unmistakably there — but you're still comfortable enough to move around, change outfits, and enjoy yourself. After 36 weeks things can become a little unpredictable (babies have their own agenda!), so I'd always recommend not leaving it too late.
Book your session as soon as you can — especially if you have a particular time of year in mind or want to take advantage of a specific season. Spring blossoms, golden autumn light, and long summer evenings all create very different but equally gorgeous results.
What to Wear
This is the question I get asked most often, and my answer is always the same: wear something that makes you feel like yourself, and don't overthink it.
Flowing fabrics work beautifully — maxi dresses, wrap styles, anything that moves nicely and shows off your bump. Neutral tones tend to photograph well, especially outdoors. But if you have a colour you love, wear it.
I always suggest bringing two or three options so we can try different looks during the session. And comfort matters just as much as style — if you're tugging at something or self-conscious in it, that will show in the photos.
I'm happy to share a full outfit guide when you book, with specific suggestions for both indoor and outdoor sessions.
What About Partners, Other Children, or Pets?
All very welcome. Some clients want an intimate solo session — just them and their bump — while others want the whole family involved, toddlers and labradors included.
Including your partner creates some of the most moving images: quiet moments of connection, hands on the bump, foreheads together. Including older siblings often produces the funniest and most joyful shots of the whole session — children are wonderfully unselfconscious, and the camera loves them for it.
Pets are a particular speciality of mine. A dog or cat in a maternity shoot adds warmth and personality, and those images tend to become firm family favourites.
After the Session: Your Photographs
After your session I'll carefully edit your images and deliver a beautifully curated gallery of your favourite shots. You can choose which photography package you would like and you'll be able to view and download your photographs, and I can also help you choose prints, albums, or wall art if you'd like to display them at home.
These are the images you'll show your child one day. The ones that will sit on the shelf and take you straight back to this moment — the waiting, the wonder, the enormous love you already felt before they'd even arrived.
