When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Photoshoot in London? (And Why It's Earlier Than You Think)

You've got the nursery sorted. The tiny sleepsuits are washed and folded. The hospital bag is (almost) packed. And somewhere on your mental to-do list sits: newborn photoshoot — organise after baby arrives.
I completely understand it. When you're pregnant, booking a photographer feels like something that can wait. You don't know exactly when baby will come. You don't know how you'll feel. And honestly, there's so much else going on.
But here's what I tell every expectant parent who gets in touch with me: the best time to book your newborn photoshoot is while you're still pregnant — ideally somewhere between 28 and 36 weeks.
Let me explain why.
The Golden Window: Days 5 to 14
Newborn photography has a magic window, and it's a short one.
In the first two weeks of life — particularly between days five and fourteen — babies are at their most naturally sleepy and curly. They still hold that beautiful tucked-up position from the womb. Their skin is soft and peachy. They'll curl into those adorable poses that make everyone go weak at the knees, and they'll sleep through most of the session.
After around two to three weeks, babies become more alert and wakeful, which is wonderful for their development — but it does make those classic, deeply-posed newborn images much harder to achieve. By six weeks, that particular style of session simply isn't possible in the same way.
So the session itself needs to happen fast. Which means the booking needs to happen before baby arrives.
Why South London Photographers Get Booked Up Quickly
London is a busy city, and South West London — Balham, Clapham, Wandsworth, Brixton, Wimbledon — is full of young families. Good newborn photographers in the area tend to hold a limited number of sessions each month to ensure every family gets proper time and attention.
When parents contact me after the birth, hoping to book within the next week or two, I often have to deliver disappointing news: I'm already full. The families who got those spots booked during their second or third trimester.
By booking in advance, you're securing a place in my diary without locking yourself into a specific date. Once your baby arrives, you simply get in touch and we arrange the session for a few days later when everyone has settled in a little.
What Happens If Baby Arrives Early — Or Late?
This is always the first question, and it's a good one.
Babies don't read calendars. If your little one arrives a few weeks earlier than expected, we adjust. If they're fashionably late, same thing. Booking in advance isn't about fixing a date in stone — it's about reserving your place so that when the time comes, we're ready to go.
I ask parents to get in touch as soon as possible after the birth, and we'll find a slot that falls within that golden two-week window. It's a relaxed process, not a rigid one.
At-Home Sessions: Another Reason Early Booking Matters
All of my newborn sessions take place in your home, which is one of the things my South London clients tell me they love most. There's no packing up a tiny baby and driving across the city. No unfamiliar studio. Just your space, your light, your family — and me arriving with everything needed for the session.
It also means the photos genuinely reflect your life. The light in your bedroom. The blanket your mum knitted. The armchair you'll spend many an early morning feeding in. These things make the images truly yours.
Because I work in your home, sessions can be booked and fitted around you much more flexibly — but I still only take a set number of bookings each month, so availability is real.
The Short Answer
If you're reading this and you're pregnant — now is the right time to get in touch.
You don't need to have everything figured out. You don't need a due date set in stone. A quick message is all it takes to have a chat, ask any questions, and get your name in the diary.
The families who end up with the most beautiful newborn photos aren't the ones who planned it perfectly. They're the ones who booked early enough that there was no rush, no stress, and no missed window.
And those tiny curled-up days? They really do go faster than you can imagine.
