What Happens During a Newborn Photoshoot at Home in London? A Step-by-Step Guide

Whaat happens during a newborn photoshoot at home in London

You've just brought your baby home. The world feels simultaneously enormous and incredibly small — just the three (or four, or five!) of you, cocooned in those early newborn days. The last thing you want to do is pack up nappies, a feeding kit, and a tiny, sleepy human and venture across London to a photography studio.

That's exactly why I offer in-home newborn photoshoots across London — so you don't have to go anywhere. I come to you, working around your baby's feeds, naps, and natural rhythms, in the place where you feel most comfortable.

But if you've never had a newborn photoshoot at home before, it's completely natural to wonder: what actually happens? How long does it take? Do I need to tidy the house? What if my baby won't stop crying?

Here's your honest, step-by-step guide to exactly what to expect from an in-home newborn photoshoot in London with Balham Bumps & Babies.

Before the Shoot: Booking & Planning

When to Book

Newborns are most naturally sleepy and curled up in those very first two weeks of life, which is the ideal window for the classic wrapped and posed newborn shots. I'd recommend getting in touch during your pregnancy — ideally from around 28 weeks — so we can pencil in a flexible date around your due date.

Don't worry if your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked yet. Lifestyle newborn photography (more candid, documentary-style shots of your family together) works beautifully at any age in the first six weeks.

The Pre-Shoot Chat

Once you've booked, we'll have a relaxed conversation — by phone, email, or WhatsApp — to talk through what you're hoping for from your gallery. Do you love clean, minimal images with simple wraps and white tones? Or are you drawn to warmer, lifestyle shots with your baby in your arms, on your bed, surrounded by the everyday life of your home? There's no right answer, and most sessions include a beautiful mix of both. If you're looking for ideas, a great place to start is on my newborn baby portfolio.

This is also when I'll answer any questions you have, talk you through the best rooms to use at home, and share a few simple tips to help the session run as smoothly as possible.

The Morning of the Shoot: Simple Preparation

Keep It Relaxed

You don't need to deep-clean your house. Honestly. A tidy-ish corner, a well-lit room, your bedroom, and maybe a favourite armchair — that's all we need. Natural light can be our best friend, so I'll scope out the best spots when I arrive.

Feed Your Baby Just Before I Arrive

A full, sleepy baby is the golden ticket for a beautiful newborn session. Try to time a feed for just before or as I'm arriving. Don't worry if the timing isn't perfect — we work entirely around your baby's needs throughout.

Have a Few Props Ready (If You'd Like)

You don't need to source anything specially. But if you have a blanket that's meaningful to you, a soft toy, or even a little knitted outfit gifted by a grandparent, do have it nearby. The most personal shots are often the simplest ones.

Wear Something Comfortable

For the lifestyle images — the ones where you're holding your baby, lying on the bed, or sitting in the morning light — you'll want to wear something you feel good in. Neutral tones (creams, greys, soft blues) photograph beautifully and won't distract from your baby's tiny face. But wear what makes you feel you.

Step-by-Step: What Happens During the Session

Step 1: I Arrive & We Get Settled (15–20 Minutes)

Your newborn photographer will arrive at your London home with a bag of carefully chosen wraps, props, and backdrops — but we'll use them lightly and only if they feel right for you. The first few minutes are always a gentle settle-in. I'll have a look around the home for the best light, we'll have a cup of tea (always yes to tea), and I'll check in on how your baby is doing.

There's no rush. Sessions are never timed to the minute — we follow your baby's lead.

Step 2: Wrapped & Posed Newborn Shots

If your baby is sleepy and content, this is a lovely place to start. Using soft, stretchy wraps — often in neutral tones like cream, blush, or oatmeal — I'll gently pose your baby in classic newborn positions: curled up, or cradled. These are the timeless images that tend to end up framed above the cot.

I work slowly, patiently, and always with your baby's comfort as the absolute priority. If they wake up, we pause, you feed or soothe them, and we try again. This is completely normal — it's just part of how a natural, unhurried in-home newborn session works.

Step 3: Parent & Family Shots

Some of the most treasured images from a newborn session aren't of your baby alone — they're of you together. Your hands wrapped around their tiny body. Your partner looking at them with that expression they didn't know they had yet. Your toddler leaning in for a curious sniff.

These are taken naturally, without stiff posing. I'll guide you gently — "rest your chin here", "look down at them" — but mostly I'm capturing real moments as they happen.

Step 4: Lifestyle & Detail Shots

While your baby rests or feeds, I'll take time to capture the beautiful details: those impossibly small fingers and toes, the curve of a sleeping cheek, the light falling across your bedroom floor. I'll also capture wider lifestyle shots — your baby on the bed, in their Moses basket, in the crook of your arm on the sofa. These feel like real life, because they are.

Step 5: Siblings & Extended Family (Optional)

If you have older children or grandparents visiting, this is a wonderful opportunity to capture them too. Sibling shots are some of my favourites — full of genuine curiosity, tenderness, and the occasional hilarious expression.

Step 6: Wrapping Up

A typical in-home newborn session lasts 1.5 - 2 hours, though we never rush. By the end, your baby will probably be ready for another feed (and you'll probably be ready for another cup of tea). I'll pack up quietly and leave you to your afternoon.

After the Shoot: Your Gallery

Within a couple of weeks, you'll receive a link to your slideshow and you can choose which package to go for and will then get access to your private online gallery, filled with professionally edited images in my signature style — soft, timeless, and true to the mood of your home that day. You'll be able to choose your favourites for prints, albums, or wall art, and download your digital files to keep forever.

Common Questions About In-Home Newborn Photoshoots in London

Does my house need to be a certain size? Not at all. I've photographed in everything from spacious Clapham townhouses to cosy Brixton flats. We find the light, and we work with what we have.

What if my baby cries the whole time? It happens! Babies are babies. We take breaks, you feed and settle them, and we try again. The session is never over just because your baby is having a moment. Patience is simply part of the job.

Do I have to be 'in' the photos? Absolutely not — though I'd encourage you to be. So many new parents later wish they had more images of themselves in those early days. You don't need to be camera-ready. You just need to be there.

Which areas of London do you cover? I'm based in Balham and cover South West London and South East London — including Clapham, Wandsworth, Tooting, Streatham, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Greenwich, and many more. I also travel further into central and north London — just ask.

What's the best time of day for a newborn photoshoot at home? Morning light is usually the most beautiful and consistent, so sessions often start between 9am and 11am. But we can work around your baby's routine — that always comes first.
