From Bump to First Birthday: Documenting Your Baby's First Year with a Professional Photographer

Your baby's first year with a professional photographer

"The days are long but the years are short." Every parent knows this truth — and yet somehow it still catches us by surprise.

From the moment you see those two pink lines, time takes on a new quality. Weeks blur into months, and the tiny, curled-up creature who once fit in the crook of your arm is suddenly pulling themselves up to standing and eyeing up your birthday cake. The first year of a baby's life is unlike any other — a cascade of firsts that happen so fast they can feel almost impossible to hold onto.

That's exactly why so many South London families choose to document this extraordinary year with professional photography. As a maternity and baby photographer in London, I've had the privilege of watching hundreds of families grow — from the quiet magic of a maternity shoot in the parks of Balham and Clapham, to the candid chaos of a first birthday celebration. And I can tell you: you will never, ever regret having these pictures.

In this guide, I'll walk you through each stage of your baby's first year, what to expect from a professional photography session at each milestone, and how a first year baby photography package can help you capture the whole extraordinary story — without the stress.

Why Professional Photography Makes the Difference

Phone cameras have come a long way — but there are things a professional photographer brings that no app can replicate. The ability to read the light at golden hour in Tooting Bec Common. The patience to wait for the exact moment a newborn's hand curls around a tiny finger. The experience to make an overtired six-month-old smile genuinely, not just for a split second before the meltdown.

There are four things that make professional photography truly irreplaceable:

You're in the frame too. Professional photography means you're not the one behind the camera. You actually appear in your child's first year — something parents almost always wish they'd done more of.

Consistency across sessions. Booking with the same photographer means a cohesive visual story — same warmth, same style, the same quality from bump to birthday. When you lay all the images side by side at the end of the year, the effect is breathtaking.

The details you'll forget. The wrinkled knuckles. The milk-drunk expression. The way they slept with their hands above their head. A professional captures what you're too exhausted and overwhelmed to notice in the moment.

Images that truly last. Professional files are print-ready at any size. Your children will want these photographs when they're grown — not a blurry phone screenshot.

Six Sessions. One Irreplaceable Story.

Here's how a first year baby photography package typically unfolds — and what makes each stage so worth capturing.

Session One: The Maternity Shoot

Best timing: 28–34 weeks pregnant

Your maternity shoot is where the story begins. The sweet spot is between 28 and 34 weeks — when your bump is beautifully round and you're still feeling comfortable enough to move freely and enjoy the experience. South London offers some truly stunning backdrops: the sweeping grounds of Brockwell Park, the tree-lined avenues of Tooting Bec Common, the riverside light along the Thames — or simply the warm intimacy of your own home.

A maternity photoshoot in London isn't about perfectly styled poses. It's about the way you hold your bump. The way your partner looks at you. The quiet anticipation of a life about to change forever. These are the images that will hang in your hallway and make you catch your breath every time you walk past them.

South London tip: Dulwich Park, Clapham Common, and Brockwell Park all offer beautiful seasonal backdrops — bluebell carpets in spring, golden hour light in autumn. As a Balham-based photographer, I know exactly which spots catch the light at what time of year.

Session Two: The Newborn Session

Best timing: Days 5–14

There is simply nothing like a newborn photography session. The ideal window is within the first two weeks of life, when babies still curl naturally and sleep deeply — that rare, fleeting state that passes so quickly. I come to you, setting up in the comfort of your own home so that you don't have to go anywhere with a brand new baby (the logistics of which, as you'll discover, are no small feat).

I work gently and unhurriedly. Sessions take as long as they need to — whether baby needs a feed, a nappy change, or simply a long cuddle. The result is a collection of timeless images: tiny hands, those impossibly small toes, the whole family meeting each other for the first time.

Important: book your newborn session during pregnancy — ideally before 36 weeks. Babies have a habit of arriving early, and these sessions need to happen in that precious two-week window. I'd hate for you to miss it because of availability.

Session Three: The First Smiles Session

Best timing: Around 3 months

By three months, everything has changed. Your baby has found their smile — those gummy, whole-body grins that make your heart completely dissolve. They're starting to focus, to track, to respond. They're becoming a little person with opinions and expressions all of their own.

This is a beautiful time for a baby milestone photoshoot at home — capturing that transition from sleepy newborn to alert, engaged baby. Sessions at this age have a delightfully different energy: you'll feature prominently, covered in smiles as you hold your baby up, and the joy in the room is entirely contagious.

Session Four: The Sitting Up Session

Best timing: Around 6 months

Six months is one of my absolute favourite ages to photograph. Babies are sitting up independently (or nearly there), utterly fascinated by the world, and their full personality is on delightful display. They're not yet mobile enough to crawl away from you mid-session, which makes for wonderfully expressive, joyful portraits.

This is also a perfect time for outdoor sessions — a baby photoshoot in South London surrounded by seasonal blooms is one of my favourite things to create. The lavender fields at Mayfield (just outside London) are particularly magical for summer babies at this age. Ask me about seasonal location sessions.

Session Five: The On-the-Move Session

Best timing: Around 9 months

Nine months means crawling, cruising along furniture, possibly a first attempt at standing — and an absolute determination to explore everything, especially whatever you've just said "no" to. Sessions at this age are wonderfully dynamic and candid. Your baby's personality is fully formed: the sense of fun, the curiosity, the mischief. These make for the most natural, storytelling photographs of the whole year.

As an older baby photographer in London, I follow the baby's lead entirely at this stage. Some of my most treasured images from nine-month sessions have come from simply sitting on the floor and letting them come to me.

Session Six: The First Birthday

Best timing: 12 months

And here you are. One whole year. Twelve months that somehow passed in both an instant and an eternity.

The first birthday is an occasion worth celebrating with the full photographic treatment — whether that's a styled cake smash, a family portrait session, a party full of the people who love them, or a peaceful outdoor session in the same park where you once walked while heavily pregnant. A first birthday photoshoot in Balham or across South London is a beautiful way to bookend the year — and when placed alongside your maternity images, the transformation is nothing short of extraordinary.

Cake smash sessions are exactly as chaotic and adorable as they sound. I provide styling guidance, backdrop options, and a very large number of wipes. Your baby provides the enthusiasm. Together we create images that will be family legends.

The First Year Baby Photography Package

Rather than booking each session separately, many families choose a first year photography package — combining maternity, newborn, and two or more milestone sessions into a single, cohesive story of the first year. It's a simpler experience, often better value, and ensures a consistent visual thread from bump to birthday.

You will look back on these pictures and remember not just how they looked, but how it felt — the weight of them in your arms, the smell of their hair, the particular sound of their laugh at seven months old.

Based in Balham, Shooting Across South London

Based in Balham, I work with families across South London and the wider city — including Clapham, Tooting, Streatham, Brixton, Dulwich, Herne Hill, Battersea, Wandsworth, Stockwell, and Kennington, as well as further afield.

Home sessions are always available for newborns and younger babies, and are often the most intimate, personal sessions we create together. Older babies and first birthdays tend to love the outdoor light and space that South London's green spaces provide so generously.

How to Book

The best time to reach out is during your second trimester — ideally by around 30 weeks. This gives us time to plan your maternity session, pencil in a provisional newborn date, and map out the milestones you'd most like to capture across the year.

Newborn sessions book up quickly, and since the window is so specific, it's important to have everything in place before your baby arrives.

If your baby has already arrived and you haven't yet had a shoot — please don't worry. Whether you're at three months, six months, or standing on the cusp of a first birthday, it is never too late to start. Every age has its own particular magic, and I'll help you capture exactly where you are right now.
