The Best Locations for Family Photoshoots in Balham, South West London

One of the loveliest things about being a family photographer based in Balham is having some genuinely beautiful outdoor spaces right on the doorstep. Whether you're looking for a classic parkland backdrop, a wilder woodland feel, or something a little more relaxed and everyday, South West London really does deliver. I've been photographing families across this corner of London for years, and I've built up a real collection of favourite locations — spots where the light falls beautifully, where children have room to run and be themselves, and where parents can actually relax and enjoy the experience.
So if you've been wondering where the best locations for family photoshoots in Balham are, here's my guide.
Tooting Bec Common (SW16/SW17)
Just a short walk or a quick bus ride from Balham, Tooting Bec Common is one of my absolute favourite spots for outdoor shoots. It's large enough to offer real variety within a single session — open grassland, mature trees, the beautiful avenue of limes, and the gorgeous art deco Lido as a backdrop if you fancy something a little different. It works brilliantly for family shoots, children's sessions, older baby and toddler portraits, and it's particularly stunning in autumn when the trees turn. There's plenty of space for little ones to run around, which always makes for lovely, natural images.
Wandsworth Common (SW18)
Wandsworth Common has a slightly different feel to Tooting Bec — it's a bit more enclosed in places, with some wonderful wooded pockets and beautiful pond areas that catch the light perfectly in the early morning or late afternoon. I love it for maternity shoots in particular, as well as family sessions where you want something a little more intimate and painterly. The mixture of open space and dappled shade gives us lots of options within a short walk, which is always a bonus when you've got young children in tow.
Clapham Common (SW4)
Clapham Common is a classic South London location, and for good reason. The long avenues of trees make for stunning natural frames, and the open areas give toddlers and older children room to run, jump, throw leaves and generally be brilliantly chaotic — which is, of course, where the best photographs come from. It's also a great location for maternity shoots, especially in spring when the blossom is out, or in autumn. Easily accessible from Balham, it's a favourite with many of the families I work with.
Streatham Common and Rookery (SW16)
This one is a bit of a hidden gem. Streatham Common is beautiful in its own right, but it's the Rookery — the formal walled garden at the top of the common — that really makes it special. The Rookery has a really distinctive, slightly magical quality that photographs wonderfully. It's a brilliant location for maternity shoots, children's portraits and family sessions, and because it's a little less well known than some of the other spots on this list, it tends to feel wonderfully peaceful, even on a sunny weekend afternoon.
Brockwell Park (SE24)
Just a little further east but very much worth the journey, Brockwell Park is one of my favourite locations in all of South London. The hill gives you a dramatic sweep of open space with gorgeous London skyline views, while the lido, the walled garden and the old Brockwell Hall provide some really beautiful and varied backdrops within a single location. I particularly love it for family shoots and children's sessions, and it's especially stunning in spring and early summer. Families from Herne Hill, Brixton, Tulse Hill and Streatham often choose Brockwell Park, and it's not far at all from Balham.
Your Own Back Garden or Street
It might sound obvious, but don't underestimate the magic of your own outdoor space. Some of my favourite images have been taken in ordinary Balham back gardens — a child playing on a swing, a family sitting on the grass, a toddler nose-deep in a flower bed. Your garden, your street, your local park where you walk the dog every morning — these are the places that are genuinely meaningful to your family, and that meaning comes through in the photographs. If you have a lovely outdoor space at home, it's absolutely worth considering as a shoot location.
What to Think About When Choosing a Location
Every family is different, and the right location really does depend on what matters most to you and what works best for your children on the day. With babies and very young toddlers, a session at home is often the most relaxed option — it removes the logistical challenge of getting everyone to a location and back, and creates a beautiful, intimate feel. For older toddlers and children who have energy to burn, an outdoor park session often works brilliantly — movement and play produce natural, joyful images that you simply can't replicate in a controlled environment.
I always talk location through with families before we book, so that we can find the right setting for you. And if the British weather has other ideas on the day, we'll either adapt and embrace it (rain can make for genuinely wonderful photographs) or we'll move the session to your home, which is equally beautiful in its own way.
