What to Expect from a Maternity Photo Shoot in London (South London Guide)

Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary chapters of your life. Your body is doing something remarkable, and those weeks of anticipation, excitement, and quiet wonder pass faster than you'd ever imagine. A professional maternity photo shoot in London is one of the most meaningful ways to hold onto this fleeting time — and if you're based in South London, you're surrounded by some of the most beautiful locations imaginable.
At Balham Bumps & Babies, I've had the privilege of photographing hundreds of expectant mums, couples, and families across South West London and beyond. If you're thinking about booking a pregnancy photo shoot but aren't sure what to expect, this guide will walk you through everything — from when to book to what to wear on the day.
When Is the Best Time for a Maternity Photo Shoot?
The sweet spot for maternity photography is typically between 28 and 36 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully round and defined, but you're still comfortable enough to move around freely and enjoy the session.
Leaving it much later than 36 weeks can make the session tiring — and of course, babies have a habit of arriving on their own schedule! If you're hoping to book, I'd recommend getting in touch around the 24–28 week mark so we have plenty of time to plan and secure a date that works for you.
If you're expecting twins or have been advised by your midwife that your pregnancy may progress quickly, booking a little earlier is a good idea.
What Locations Are Available for Maternity Photography in South London?
One of the most common questions I get is: where can we do the shoot? The answer is: wherever feels right for you.
South London is genuinely one of the best places in the city for outdoor maternity photography, with an incredible variety of settings right on your doorstep.
Popular South London locations include:
Dulwich Park (SE21) — Gorgeous in every season, with wide open spaces, mature trees, and a beautiful boating lake. This is a firm favourite for maternity sessions.
Brockwell Park (SE24, Herne Hill) — Elevated views, wildflower meadows, and a lido that gives a lovely backdrop in summer.
Tooting Common (SW17) — Close to Balham, Tooting, and Streatham, and perfect for relaxed, natural outdoor portraits.
Clapham Common (SW4) — Iconic South London greenery, wonderful in golden hour.
Crystal Palace Park (SE19) — Full of character, with dramatic Victorian ruins, sculptures, and woodlands.
Ruskin Park (SE5, Camberwell/Denmark Hill) — A hidden gem for beautiful, peaceful photography.
Greenwich Park (SE10) — Sweeping views of the London skyline make for truly spectacular pregnancy portraits.
Indoor or studio-style sessions are also absolutely an option. Many mums-to-be prefer the intimacy of a home shoot — particularly if you'd like to capture the nursery you've lovingly prepared, or simply feel more relaxed in your own space. I travel across South London and the wider London area, including Balham, Streatham, Brixton, Tooting, Herne Hill, Clapham, and Wandsworth.
What Happens on the Day?
Many clients tell me they're nervous before their session — particularly if they've never had a professional photo shoot before. I want to reassure you: you really don't need any modelling experience. My job is to guide you, and I genuinely love helping people feel relaxed and at ease in front of the camera.
Here's a rough idea of what to expect on the day of your maternity shoot:
1. A relaxed hello and a walk around the location We'll meet at the agreed location (or I'll arrive at your home) and take a few minutes to get comfortable. If we're outdoors, I'll scout the best spots for the light and your preferred style. There's no rush — this isn't a conveyor belt.
2. Guided, natural posing I'll gently direct you into flattering positions that feel natural and comfortable. We'll capture a mix of relaxed candid moments and more intentional poses — always tailored to what suits you. Partners and siblings are very welcome and add a beautiful dimension to the session.
3. Outfit changes (if you'd like) Many clients bring two outfits — one for a more casual, natural look and one for something a little more dramatic or glamorous. There are no rules, and I'm happy to advise based on your vision and the location.
4. A fun, unhurried experience Sessions typically last one to two hours, giving us plenty of time to settle in, experiment with different spots, and enjoy the experience rather than feel rushed.
What Should I Wear for My Maternity Photo Shoot?
What you wear will have a significant impact on the feel of your photos. Here are a few guiding principles:
Fitted clothing shows off your bump beautifully. Flowing dresses, wrap-style tops, or stretchy fabrics that highlight your shape tend to photograph particularly well.
Bold patterns can distract. Solid colours, muted tones, and soft fabrics tend to photograph more elegantly and stand the test of time.
Nude, cream, ivory, and blush tones are universally flattering for maternity photography, especially outdoors.
Bring options. Don't agonise over one perfect outfit — pack a couple and we can try both.
Comfort matters. You want to feel like yourself. If you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, that will show in the photos.
I'm always happy to chat through outfit ideas before your session — just drop me a message.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Maternity Photography: Which Is Right for You?
Both have their place, and the choice is entirely yours.
Outdoor maternity photography in London's parks and green spaces gives you natural light, beautiful scenery, and a sense of freedom. South London's parks are genuinely stunning through every season — spring blossom in Dulwich, golden autumn light in Brockwell Park, or a crisp winter morning on Clapham Common can all produce breathtaking results.
Indoor or home-based sessions offer intimacy and a different kind of beauty. Soft window light is deeply flattering for pregnancy portraits. Home sessions also allow for studio-style backdrops, fabric draping, and a more controlled creative environment. If you have a beautiful nursery or a favourite room in your home, these make for incredibly meaningful images.
We can also combine both — starting at home and then heading to a local South London park, or vice versa.
Do I Need to Bring My Partner or Other Children?
Absolutely not — but you're very welcome to.
Some mums-to-be prefer a solo session that's entirely about celebrating their body and this remarkable time in their life. Others want their partner involved, either throughout the whole session or just for some of it. If you have older children, including them can create incredibly touching family portraits that capture the full picture of your growing family.
Just let me know in advance so we can plan the session accordingly.
What Happens After the Shoot?
After your session, I'll carefully select and edit the best images, applying my signature style of warm, timeless toning. You'll typically receive your gallery within two weeks, delivered via an online gallery where you can choose your favourites.
From your gallery, you can select prints, wall art, albums, or digital files — whatever works best for you. These are images you'll cherish for the rest of your life, and I take enormous care in ensuring they're worthy of the moment they represent.
