Where to Find Newborn Photography Sessions in London (And Why Timing Really Matters)

A friendly, no-fluff guide to booking your newborn photoshoot — from a South West London photographer who absolutely loves this stuff.
You've just brought the most incredible tiny human into the world. Congratulations — you absolute superstar. Now, between the feeds, the nappy changes, the visitors, and the spectacular sleep deprivation, someone might have mentioned something about newborn photos.
And here's the thing: they're right. Not in a pushy way, but in a you will genuinely thank yourself later kind of way. Those early days — the curled-up little fists, the milk-drunk expressions, the impossibly tiny everything — vanish almost before they've begun.
As a photographer based in Balham, South West London, capturing newborns is one of my absolute favourite things to do. So let me walk you through everything you need to know.
Why the first two weeks are the golden window
Newborn sessions work best within the first 7 to 14 days after birth. During this time, babies tend to be wonderfully sleepy and still love to curl up into that perfect little ball shape — which makes for the most gorgeous, classic newborn images.
After about two weeks, babies start becoming more alert and aware of the world around them. They're still completely beautiful (of course!), but they're also a little more opinionated about being posed. We can still get wonderful shots beyond the two-week mark — but there's something extra magical about those very first days.
Juliet's tip: Book your newborn session around three months before your due date — ideally during your second trimester. I'll pencil you in around your expected arrival and confirm the details once your baby is here. That way, you're not scrambling to find someone when you're running on four hours of sleep and a biscuit.
What a session with me actually looks like
I come to you. That's right — no packing up the nappy bag, no navigating the car seat, no stressing about parking. I bring everything we need to your home in Balham, Clapham, Streatham, Tooting, or wherever you're based across South West London.
Sessions take around two hours and are entirely baby-led. Babies feed, sleep, and fuss — and that's all completely part of it. I work at your baby's pace, not the clock's. If we need to pause for a feed or a change (or three), we pause. There's absolutely no rush.
Where - At your home
No travel needed — I come to you, anywhere across London.
How Long - About 2 hours
Relaxed and unhurried — we go at your baby's pace entirely.
Props included
I bring a selection of wraps, hats, baskets, and beautiful props.
Family moments
Parents and siblings are always welcome — these shots are often the most treasured.
During the session we can capture a mix of natural lifestyle shots and more classic posed newborn images with props — or lean fully into one style. It's entirely up to you and what feels right for your family.
Natural or classic? You choose the style
Some families love those beautifully styled images — baby wrapped in soft textures, nestled in a little basket, all dreamy and serene. Others prefer something more real and documentary: the cuddles, the chaos, the cat photobombing in the background (it happens).
At Balham Bumps & Babies, I offer both. We can talk through what resonates with you before the session, and on the day we'll find the perfect balance. There's no wrong answer — just whatever makes you feel like you.
"We were in two minds whether to do a photoshoot with our newborn, as there was so much going on in those first few weeks, but we are so glad we did! Juliet was friendly and professional and put us at total ease."

A note on neurodiversity
I'm proud to be a neurodiversity-friendly photographer and my own daughter is autistic. Sessions are designed to be calm, flexible, and low-pressure — for babies, toddlers, and parents alike. If you have any specific needs or concerns, please do reach out before booking and we can make sure everything is set up to work beautifully for your family.
What you'll receive afterwards
Once your images are beautifully edited, you'll receive them via a private online gallery — yours to browse, download, and share with the grandparents (who will absolutely lose it). From there, you can also explore options for prints, albums, and wall art — because some images genuinely deserve to be larger than a phone screen.
Sessions start from £374, which I think you'll agree is a small investment for something you'll treasure for the rest of your life.
