The Best Parks & Outdoor Locations for a Family Photoshoot in South West London (Spring 2026 Guide)

The best parks in London for family photo shoots
Sunshine in Brockwell Park

Spring is finally here in South West London, and honestly? It's the best time of year for outdoor family photography. The trees are bursting into blossom, the light is soft and golden, and after months of grey skies and muddy wellies, everyone is ready to be outside. If you've been thinking about booking a family photoshoot, there really is no better season to do it — and no better place than the beautiful green spaces right on your doorstep.

As a family photographer based in Balham, I'm lucky enough to work in one of the most photogenic corners of London. From wide open commons to secret woodland paths and those jaw-dropping cherry blossom avenues, South West London is an absolute treasure trove for outdoor photography. Here's my guide to some of the best spots — and why spring makes each one truly magical.

Clapham Common, SW4

Just a short walk from Balham, Clapham Common is a wonderfully versatile location for family photos. In spring, the trees along the edges of the common come alive with fresh green leaves, and there are beautiful spots where dappled light filters through the branches — perfect for natural, relaxed portraits.

The wide open grassland is brilliant for families with energetic toddlers who just want to run, while the tree-lined paths offer more intimate, shaded backdrops for quieter moments. It's also an easy location for families with buggies or younger children, with plenty of café stops nearby if you need a post-shoot treat (and let's be honest — you will).

Best for: Families with toddlers and young children, relaxed lifestyle sessions, golden hour shoots in late afternoon.

Tooting Bec Common, SW16

One of my personal favourite locations, Tooting Bec Common has a slightly wilder, more natural feel than some of the more manicured parks in the area. In spring, the woodland sections are absolutely stunning — the undergrowth turns vivid green, bluebells can appear in sheltered corners, and the light through the trees creates the most beautiful, painterly quality in photographs.

The common is large enough that you can always find a quiet spot away from dog walkers and joggers, which makes it much easier to capture those genuine, unposed family moments. It's also wonderfully dog-friendly if your four-legged family member is joining the shoot!

Best for: Natural, woodland-style photography, families with dogs, older children and teenagers.

The Rookery, Streatham Common, SW16

Tucked away at the top of Streatham Common, The Rookery is one of South London's best-kept secrets — and in spring, it is honestly one of the most beautiful photography locations in the entire city. This gorgeous ornamental garden feels like stepping into a secret world, completely hidden from the bustle of Streatham High Road below.

In spring, The Rookery absolutely comes into its own. The formal flowerbeds burst into colour, the ancient wisteria begins to bloom, and the sheltered sunken garden creates the most incredible, intimate backdrop for portraits. The white garden is particularly magical — a dreamy, soft palette that works beautifully in photographs and feels worlds away from a typical park shoot.

The Rookery also has a lovely, unhurried atmosphere that makes it brilliant for photographing young children. There's enough visual interest to keep little ones curious and engaged — which, as any parent knows, is half the battle when it comes to getting natural, happy expressions in photos!

Best for: Newborn and baby photography (with parents), maternity shoots, families wanting a more romantic and formal garden setting, blossom and wisteria season (April–May).

Brockwell Park, SE24

Straddling the border of Herne Hill and Brixton, Brockwell Park is one of South London's real hidden gems — and in spring it is absolutely breathtaking. The walled garden and the grounds around Brockwell Hall are particularly stunning, with blossom trees, flowering shrubs, and gorgeous views across the London skyline.

The elevated position of the park means you can capture that classic London backdrop — a sea of rooftops and the City in the distance — while still being surrounded by nature. It's a brilliant choice for families who want something a little different from a standard park shoot, with more visual interest and variety in a single location.

Best for: Families who want a mix of greenery and London skyline, blossom season shoots (March–April), couples and maternity photography.

Dulwich Park, SE21

If cherry blossom is what you're dreaming of, Dulwich Park should be top of your list. In late March and April, the park's famous cherry and ornamental blossom trees are simply spectacular — those clouds of pink and white flowers make for the most gorgeous, romantic backdrops imaginable.

Dulwich Park is beautifully maintained and has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere that works brilliantly for family photography. The wide paths, open meadows, and ornamental lake give plenty of variety across a single shoot, meaning you can move between different backdrops without ever leaving the park. I've shot many maternity and family sessions here and it never disappoints.

Best for: Blossom season photography (late March–April), maternity shoots, family portraits with young babies.

Wandsworth Common, SW12 & SW18

Right on the doorstep for many Balham and Wandsworth families, Wandsworth Common is a wonderfully relaxed and photogenic location. The mix of open grassland, woodland areas, and a pretty pond makes it easy to vary the look and feel of a shoot without travelling far.

In spring, the common has a lovely freshness to it — bright green grass, budding trees, and that gorgeous clear spring light that photographers love. It's also a brilliant choice if you have little ones who need to stay close to home or if you're fitting a shoot around nap times and busy family schedules.

Best for: Local Balham, Tooting, and Wandsworth families, flexible shoots that can work around young children's routines.

Richmond Park, TW10

A little further afield, but absolutely worth the trip — especially in spring. Richmond Park is unlike anywhere else in London; it feels genuinely wild and expansive, and the ancient oak trees, rolling grassland, and resident deer create an extraordinary backdrop for family photography.

The park is vast, which means even on busy weekends you can find secluded spots with nothing but open parkland around you. Spring light in Richmond Park, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon, is simply stunning. If you're up for a short drive or an adventure on the overground, this is one of the most spectacular photography locations in the whole of London.

Please note: a permit is required for all Royal Parks in London

Best for: Families looking for something truly special, older children and teenagers, dawn or golden hour sessions.

Cannizaro Park, Wimbledon, SW19

Bordering Wimbledon Common, Cannizaro Park is a stunning historic woodland garden that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else in South West London. Named after a Sicilian duke who once owned the neighbouring house, it has an almost fairytale quality — mature woodland, ornamental ponds, sculptures tucked among the trees, and some of the most spectacular spring flowering plants you'll find anywhere in the capital.

In spring, Cannizaro is breathtaking. The azaleas and rhododendrons begin their spectacular display from late March onwards, filling the park with vivid pinks, purples, and reds against a lush green woodland backdrop. The magnolia trees are among the finest in London, and the sheltered walled sections of the garden hold warmth early in the season, meaning flowers often appear here before almost anywhere else nearby.

For family photography, the variety of backdrops within a relatively compact space is extraordinary — you can move from open lawns to dense woodland to ornamental water features all within a short walk. It's a particularly wonderful choice for families who want something truly special and a little out of the ordinary, and the slightly further-from-the-crowd location means you're far less likely to have strangers wandering into the background of your shots.

Best for: Families looking for a truly unique and special setting, azalea and rhododendron season (late March–May), older children and teenagers, maternity photography.

When Is the Best Time for a Spring Photoshoot?

Spring in London is fleeting — blossom can come and go within just a few weeks — so timing really does matter. Here's a rough guide:

  • Late March: First blossom begins to appear, daffodils everywhere, lovely fresh green shoots

  • Early–Mid April: Peak cherry blossom season — book early as these spots get busy

  • Late April–May: Bluebells in woodland areas, lush green canopies, longer evenings for golden hour shoots

The light in spring is also genuinely beautiful for photography. The sun is lower in the sky than in summer, which means softer, warmer light for longer throughout the day — far more flattering and photogenic than harsh midday summer sunshine.
