When Is the Best Time to Photograph Your Baby? A Complete Guide to Your Baby's First Year

The first year with your baby is a whirlwind of tiny yawns, wobbly first smiles, and milestone moments that vanish before you've had a chance to catch your breath. One week you're marvelling at those impossibly small fingers; the next, your baby is sitting up and grinning at you like they own the place.
But when exactly is the best time to have your baby photographed? The answer, honestly, is more than once. Every phase of that first year brings something unique, fleeting, and utterly worth capturing.
As a specialist baby and family photographer based in Balham, South West London, I've had the privilege of photographing hundreds of babies through every stage of their first year. In this guide, I'll walk you through each key photography milestone — what makes it special, what to expect, and how to make the most of it — so you never miss the moments that matter most.
THE NEWBORN STAGE: 5 TO 14 DAYS OLD
There is nothing quite like a newborn. That soft, curled-up posture. The way they sleep so deeply they're completely unaware of the world around them. The extraordinary smallness of everything.
The golden window for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this time, babies are still wonderfully sleepy and retain that natural curled position from the womb, which allows for those beautiful, classic newborn poses you've probably fallen in love with on Instagram. Their skin is at its smoothest, and they're not yet alert enough to be easily startled by the process.
After around two to three weeks, babies become more wakeful and harder to settle into poses. That's not to say a slightly older newborn can't be photographed beautifully — they absolutely can — but the poses and flow of the session will be different.
What to expect: A newborn session at home in South London typically takes two to four hours. We work slowly and gently, feeding and settling your baby between setups. There's no rush. The session is as much about you settling into new parenthood as it is about the photographs.
My tip for London parents: Book your newborn session before your baby arrives, ideally around the 28–32 week mark of your pregnancy. That way, once your baby makes their appearance, your slot is already secured and all we need to do is confirm the date.
Locations served: I photograph newborns in the comfort of your own home across South West and South East London, including Balham, Clapham, Tooting, Wandsworth, Streatham, Brixton, Dulwich, Herne Hill, Wimbledon, and surrounding areas.
THE 3-MONTH MILESTONE: THE FIRST REAL SMILES
If the newborn stage is about stillness and softness, the three-month milestone is about joy. By around 10 to 14 weeks, most babies are producing their first proper social smiles — those gummy, whole-face grins that make every sleepless night suddenly worth it.
At this age, your baby is beginning to hold their head up with more confidence and will often lie happily on their tummy for short stretches, creating gorgeous natural poses. They're also incredibly responsive to faces and voices, which means they'll often look right at the camera when you call their name or make a silly sound.
Three-month sessions capture something that newborn sessions cannot: personality. You start to see who your baby is becoming.
What to expect: Sessions at this age tend to be more relaxed and playful than newborn shoots. We'll work with your baby's natural awake and sleep rhythms. Natural light at home works wonderfully at this stage.
My tip: Shoot in the morning when your baby is freshly fed and at their most content. Avoid scheduling around naptime if your baby tends to be grumpy when overtired.
THE 6-MONTH MILESTONE: SITTING AND DISCOVERING THE WORLD
Six months is one of my absolute favourite ages to photograph. By this point, most babies are sitting up (with a little support, or even independently), and the world has become endlessly fascinating to them. They grab at things, chew on everything, and laugh with their whole bodies.
At six months, your baby is alert, curious, and utterly photogenic. The chubby wrists, the rolls on the thighs, the look of pure concentration as they stare at something — all of it is gold.
This is also a wonderful age for including siblings or parents in the session, because babies at this stage are social and responsive without yet being mobile enough to make the session chaotic.
What to expect: Six-month sessions can take place at home or outdoors, depending on the season and your preference. South London has some gorgeous parks — Tooting Bec Common, Battersea Park, Clapham Common, and Brockwell Park all work beautifully for outdoor baby sessions in the warmer months.
My tip: Bring a couple of favourite toys or a special comforter to help settle your baby. Simple, plain outfits photograph best and keep the focus on your baby's face and expressions rather than busy patterns.
THE 9-MONTH MILESTONE: ON THE MOVE
By nine months, the world has changed completely for your baby. They're probably crawling, pulling up to stand, and getting into absolutely everything. They may have teeth. They're babbling, pointing, and responding to their name with delight.
Nine months is a transitional, dynamic age, and photographs taken now will capture that energy brilliantly. The images feel alive — full of movement, curiosity, and mischief.
This is also one of the last stages before your baby looks unmistakably like a toddler. That in-between quality — still so baby-like but clearly on the cusp of something bigger — is worth preserving.
What to expect: Sessions with babies of this age work best when we follow their lead. Gone are the posed newborn setups; instead, we create a safe, interesting environment and let your baby explore while I capture the magic. Outdoor sessions on grass work especially well at this stage.
My tip: Allow plenty of time and don't worry about your baby not "performing." The candid, unposed moments at this age are often the most beautiful of all.
THE FIRST BIRTHDAY: A CELEBRATION IN PHOTOGRAPHS
A year. An entire year has passed since that tiny newborn was placed in your arms. The first birthday is a milestone unlike any other, and it deserves to be photographed.
First birthday sessions are joyful, celebratory, and wonderfully chaotic. They might include a cake smash — where your baby gets to explore (and demolish) a cake entirely on their own terms — or a more traditional portrait session, or a combination of both.
Cake smash sessions are enormously popular, and for good reason. The pure delight on a baby's face as they discover they're allowed to make as much mess as they like is an expression you simply cannot manufacture. It's real, it's hilarious, and it's completely unique to that moment in time.
What to expect: First birthday sessions typically last around one to two hours. I'll capture portraits before the cake is introduced, so we have a mix of clean and messy images. Colour themes, decorations, and outfits are all things we can discuss in advance to make the session feel personal and special.
My tip: Don't feed your baby a large meal just before the cake smash — arriving a little hungry means they're much more motivated to dive in. Have a warm bath ready for immediately afterwards!
BEYOND THE FIRST YEAR: KEEPING UP WITH THE MILESTONES
The first year is full of the most dramatic changes your child will ever experience, but the milestones don't stop there. As they enter toddlerhood and beyond, each phase brings new expressions, new abilities, and a rapidly evolving personality.
Many of my South London families book annual or twice-yearly sessions to build a beautiful visual record of their child growing up. Watching those collections grow over time — from newborn to toddler to child — is one of the most rewarding things about what I do.
WHY TIMING YOUR BABY PHOTOGRAPHY MATTERS
You cannot go back. That's the truth that every new parent learns, often with a pang of wistfulness when they look at photos from just a few months ago and can barely remember that version of their child.
Professional photography at each stage of your baby's first year ensures that you have high-quality, beautifully lit images of each phase — not just a handful of slightly blurry phone photos taken at 2am. These are the images that will hang on your walls, be passed down to grandchildren, and genuinely make you stop and catch your breath every time you look at them.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is the best age for newborn photography?
A: The ideal window for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are still in that deeply sleepy, curled-up newborn state, which allows for the classic poses associated with newborn photography. After two to three weeks, babies tend to become more wakeful and it becomes harder to achieve those same poses. That said, babies up to around six weeks can still be beautifully photographed — the session will simply have a slightly different feel.
Q: Can I book a newborn session after my baby is born?
A: Ideally, it's better to book before your baby arrives — around 28 to 32 weeks of pregnancy — so that your slot is secured and we simply confirm the date once your baby is here. However, if you've already had your baby and haven't yet booked, please do get in touch as soon as possible. I always try to accommodate families where I can.
Q: How many baby photo sessions should I have in the first year?
A: I recommend at least two to three sessions in the first year to capture the key milestones: a newborn session in the first two weeks, a mid-year session around 5 to 6 months, and a first birthday session. Many families also add a 3-month session to capture those first smiles, and a 9-month session when their baby is on the move. Each stage is so different that even three or four sessions will feel entirely distinct.
Q: Where do baby photo sessions take place in South London?
A: Newborn sessions take place in your home, which means you and your baby are in the most comfortable, familiar environment possible. For older baby and toddler sessions, we can shoot at home or outdoors at one of South London's many beautiful parks and green spaces. I work across Balham, Clapham, Tooting, Wandsworth, Brixton, Streatham, Dulwich, Herne Hill, Wimbledon, and surrounding areas.
Q: What is a cake smash, and is it worth doing?
A: A cake smash is a photography session, typically at your baby's first birthday, where they are given a decorated cake to explore completely freely. The result is usually a combination of delighted expressions, total chaos, and incredibly joyful photographs. It's enormously popular because the reaction you capture is completely genuine — there's no way to fake a baby's pure delight at being allowed to make a mess. It is absolutely worth doing, and we always get some of the most memorable images of the whole first year from these sessions.
Q: How do I prepare my baby for a photo session?
A: The most important thing is to make sure your baby is well-rested and recently fed before the session begins. For newborn sessions, it helps to keep your baby a little warm beforehand (babies settle more easily when warm), and to feed them just before we start. For older babies and toddlers, timing the session for when they're naturally at their most alert and content — usually mid-morning — tends to work well. I'll always share a preparation guide with you before your session.
Q: Do you offer gift cards for baby photography sessions?
A: Yes! Gift cards for photography sessions make a wonderful present for new or expectant parents — particularly as a baby shower gift or a combined gift from several family members. Gift cards are available via the website at www.balhambumpsandbabies.co.uk/gift-card
Q: Are you a neurodiversity-friendly photographer?
A: Yes. I understand that some babies, toddlers, and children — and indeed some parents — may find unfamiliar environments or unexpected situations more challenging. My sessions are always relaxed, unhurried, and completely led by your family's pace. There is no pressure, no rigid schedule, and no expectation that your child will perform on cue. Please feel free to discuss any specific needs or concerns with me before your session.
Q: What happens if my baby is unsettled during the session?
A: This is completely normal, and there is never any need to worry. Feeding breaks, nappy changes, and cuddles are all part of the process — particularly for newborn sessions. I build plenty of flexibility into every session precisely because babies are wonderfully unpredictable. The session will take as long as it needs to, and we will always end up with beautiful images.
Q: How far in advance should I book?
A: For newborn sessions, I recommend booking during your second trimester (around 28–32 weeks pregnant) to secure your preferred dates around your due date. For milestone sessions and birthday shoots, a few weeks' notice is usually sufficient, though popular time slots (particularly weekends) can book up quickly, so earlier is always better.
